Replacement Window Types

There are many things to choose when deciding on replacement basement windows.  Probably one of the most important of these is choosing what type of basement windows you want.  There are a few factors to consider, the style of the window and the material that they are made from.

With styles, there are three that are the most common to choose from.  All of these are completely up to your personal preference and the way you’d like your replacement basement windows to look.  The first type are awning windows.  They crank out sideways and are the most expensive.  Although they are more expensive they also have the most features and tend to look the most stylish and fancy.  Because of the way the windows open, they can be opened to vent even in the rain and snow.  The rain or snow will simply slide off the window instead of entering the house.  Awning windows will also provide the most light as there is only one piece of glass.

Slider windows are great for a larger area and slide back and forth to open.  If you use them for smaller basement windows, they tend to seem bulky.  They are also more afforable than the awning windows and can be the better option for a large basement.  Finally, you have hopper windows for your replacement basement windows.  These are considered a standard when installing basement windows and tilt to open and close.  They are the cheapest but have the widest variety in sizes.

Out of all the materials you can choose for your replacement basement windows, by and large the most recommended are vinyl windows.  Vinyl basement windows can reduce your energy costs in addition to increasing a home’s value.  However your options are really limitless as far as materials are concerned.  You can get your basement windows out of aluminum, vinyl, or nearly anything else you can think of.  Vinyl windows may be a bit more expensive than other types, but will prove the most effective in the long run.  They will do the best job of keeping your basement at a consistent temperature regardless of the temperature outside.  Also, they come in the widest variety of sizes so that you can get whatever kind of replacement basement windows you want.

Really, basement windows are just like any other type of window.  And replacing basement windows is the same, with a few extra considerations.  Some of the best window types are the most expensive, but the cost is definitely outweighed by the extra benefit that is provided.  If you are going to remodel, you might as well make your replacement basement windows the best you can get.
